For safe travel with pets, its important to be prepared. If your dog hasnt had much experience traveling in a vehicle, practice before you head out on your adventure. This might look like first sitting in the vehicle with your dog so it can get accustomed to the environment. Then you can progress to taking brief trips around town. The

American Kennel Club

says to use a dog seatbelt, car seat, or safety harness while traveling.

Its also important to ensure your dog has ample air throughout the drive, whether its in a crate or not. Keep water available throughout the drive and be sure to make frequent stops so your dog can go potty and exercise. You probably already know this, but it cant be said enough: Do not leave your dog alone in a closed car in any season especially not in the summertime.

The American Kennel Club also says, in preparation for bathroom breaks during travel, make sure your dog can go on a variety of surfaces like concrete, mulch, and gravel after all, you never know what options may be available when road tripping. And dont forget bags so you can clean up after your pet!
