You don’t need to be a mechanic to know that a shaky steering wheel indicates a problem with your vehicle. A little vibration when driving on bumpy roads is normal, but excessive shaking needs to be addressed immediately. Failure to do so not only guarantees a rough ride, but could do serious damage to your vehicle.
Here at Lancaster Motor Company, our qualified service technicians will evaluate your vehicle to find the source – and the solution – of your shaky steering wheel. Get in touch today to schedule your service appointment!
Problems With Brakes
Bad brakes may be to blame for a shaky steering wheel. If the shaking increases when you brake, it is likely time to replace your brake rotors. Worn brake rotors can cause the brake caliper of the braking system to vibrate – and this vibration eventually reaches the steering wheel. Uneven brake pad wear can also cause a steering wheel to shake.
Engine Issues
A shaky steering wheel can also point to car engine issues, especially if you notice vibration on smooth terrain at both low and high speeds. If you notice the shaking when accelerating, a broken engine mount could be the culprit. If you notice the shaking while idling, your spark plugs may need to be replaced. Other common engine problems involve the air induction system, with dirty air filters preventing air from reaching the combustion chamber.
Wheels & Tires
Because alignment issues are a common cause of steering wheel shaking, wheel alignment checks are a good place to start. Uneven tire tread is a good indication that your vehicle needs an alignment check – and a realignment to solve the problem.
If your tires are in good shape, your wheels’ components are the next to be assessed. While wheel bearings are designed to last for your vehicle’s lifetime, occasionally they get damaged or worn out. Our team will also look for issues with tie rod ends or ball joints.
